Captain Rod Riggs with the Galesburg Police Department believes the city hasn't issued many citations for marijuana possession just yet because of the frigid winter temperatures we've had.

"It's been a cold winter and not a lot of people have been out," said Captain Rod Riggs with the Galesburg Police Department. "So far, we've issued three of those citations for the ordinance violation.  We're so early into it that it's kind of like driving with a cell phone. it's so early. its hard to get a good number on those right now."

If you're caught with up to two and a half grams of marijuana in Galesburg, you'll be fined $300.  The city has only made $900 in the two months that the ordinance has been implemented. "That's not a lot of money. I don't really think they're doing they're jobs like they should be done," Galesburg resident Timothy Bell said.  Other residents say even though they haven't caught many, it's a good effort on the city's part.

"It sounds like a good step in the right direction but sounds like they have a little more further down the road to go," said Brian Barnes.

Either way, Captain Riggs says Galesburg Police are sure to see an increase in citations soon. He adds, "things will break loose once it gets warmer. We expect to see those numbers go up."
