An organization in the Quad Cities dedicated to helping cancer victims, is at a standstill.

A frozen water line has left Gilda's Club in Davenport without water for the last 8 weeks.

Leaders there say the problem started during a string of cold days in January and has now left the organization struggling to help people.

Davenport Public Works, Iowa American Water, and private plumbers have all been there trying to fix the problem, but have been unsuccessful for now.

"Cancer doesn't wait," says Gilda's Club CEO Claudia Robinson. "The effects of the diagnoses and the effects on the entire family doesn't wait for our pipes to thaw. We just aren't able to do what we want to do. What we need to do."

But, while getting the water going again seems like a lost cause now, doesn't mean everybody has stopped trying.

Rob Benedict owns his own plumbing business in Galesburg.

4 weeks ago, he heard about the problems at Gilda's, and knew he needed to help.

"I just wanted to give back to them," he explains. "We have cancer in our family and I thought I would help them get back in here and help the healing process."

Rob has 3 family members who have had cancer, so getting Gilda's back up and running has become a mission for him.

Right now, Rob says he is close to fixing the line.

He is trying to put 200 degree water down the line to unfreeze the pipe.

This has worked up to a point, but has run into a wall in recent days.

Over the past month, he has worked over 60 hours to un-freeze the water line.

All free of charge.

"This man has done this as a contribution," explains Robinson. "He is not charging us at all to do this. And truthfully, we can't afford it."
