DAVENPORT, IA -- QC Auto Service in Davenport continues to get hit by thieves. The service manager, Jamie Niebrugge, tells us their store on North Harrison Street has been hit four times in six months.

The theft happened around eight o'clock Wednesday night after the store closed. A bin full of scrap metal was stolen by a man who jumped the fence onto QC Auto property.

The entire theft was caught on the surveillance cameras, and police are now investigating.

Niebrugge says, "You can watch him on video, he came up and he messed with the gate trying to open it. It's locked and he couldn't get it open so he comes around and climbed the fence we put in ... And got into the scrap bin."

Metal items stolen, like aluminum mufflers and steel pipes, can be taken to scrap yards and traded for easy money.

"If you fill the bin it can be worth 1500 to 2000 dollars just depending on what's in it, whether it's mufflers or radiators. That money gets used for shop equipment, shop tools," says Niebrugge.

The owner, Dan Elias, is quick to add, "It's happening on a regular basis. We're trying to take precautions. We've got cameras up, we've got lights, we've got signs. We're trying to do everything to stop it. These guys are obviously experts. They come after hours between eight and seven o'clock in the morning."

Elias says this affects the entire business. Most of all, he is concerned for the safety of his employees. "One incident, two guys were stealing at seven in the morning. My guy was going to open up the store when he meets and confronts these guys and it's scary because you don't know what's going to transpire. You don't know what's going to happen."

Davenport Police Department's Major Don Schaeffer, says they have previous theft cases from the same location. With the help of surveillance videos, two suspects have been caught in the past. Schaeffer hopes that the videos this time are clear enough to catch this suspect as well.
