"Education Loop" Proposed For Illinois Rail

Posted: Updated:

You may not need to hop in a car to drive southeast through Illinois. A state lawmaker wants to create new passenger rail service to Danville.

Representative Don Moffitt wants the train to also stop at Galesburg, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal and Champaign to connect a number of state universities. The rail service would use existing freight line tracks.

It would also allow students and professors to travel from the Western Illinois campus in the Quad Cities by transferring to an existing line in Galesburg.

"This would give better access to all the way to our state colleges," Moffitt said. "It's really access education, whether you live in northern Illinois and want to go south, live in the south and want to come north for college. It's really an educational loop."

The bill for the rail service now advances to the Illinois Senate.
