The Davenport Community School District is launching a new school that will offer STEAM, adding an "A" for the arts to traditional science, technology, engineering and math programming. This fall, the Creative Arts Academy of the Quad Cities will welcome its first class of 6th,11th and12th graders..

"I think that it could really help me to learn more communication arts," student Sydney Sands said. "That's what I'm applying for."

Representatives say the school is the first of its kind in Iowa.

"That's pretty exciting for us to offer that to the kids of the Quad Cities," planning facilitator Joel Franken said.  "We would like to see some diamonds in the rough out there that have a spark of talent."

Auditions to join the school will be held from April 25th through May 2nd. Students say they're getting excited for the potential opportunity.

"I'm getting ready my website for the links, and preparing a few short stories," Sands said.

Many parents say they're glad the school will provide their children with a platform to develop their artistic skills, but some are concerned that it might neglect traditional academic subjects.

"The core curriculum, as far as academics, the reading, writing, arithmetic go, to ensure that those needs are still being met, and they're still progressing along," Freddie Taylor, a parent, said.

School representatives say the school will meet both academic and artistic needs. Selected students will learn at several art facilities throughout downtown Davenport, including the River Music Experience.

"For us, to be able to provide something, and a place for kids, to nurture those kids, to learn music, and to partner with other people that are just as excited as we are is the best thing," said Kate Benson, director of entertainment.
