Durant/Walcott Firefighters Fight Grass Fire Near Interstate

Posted: Updated:

Another brush fire in the Quad City area had several departments responding to put it out, but the location of this one posed a special danger.

The brush fire was along Interstate 80, which meant fire crews from Walcott and Durant had to park on the shoulder of the highway.

The fire was put out before it could spread too far, but because of the Friday afternoon traffic, crews had to be even more alert about their surroundings.

"Especially on Friday, you got a lot of traffic moving along, so we really got to be careful, watch what you're doing, said Durant Fire Chief Shawn Jepsen.  "We try to keep the trucks pulled over far enough to the side of the road here to help keep traffic moving, so we don't call any father problems like that," he added.

Since it was so close to the interstate, Jepsen says the fire could have been started by a discarded cigarette or cigar. With the dry conditions, fire officials advise to properly dispose of smoking materials. There also bans on open burning in Scott, Jackson and Lee counties.
