Binge Drinking In Iowa

Posted: Updated:

April is Alcohol Awareness Month and the Iowa Department of Public Health's Division of Behavioral Health is encouraging all Iowans to educate themselves on the consequences of binge drinking.

More that 56% of Iowans are reporting that they've had a drink within the past 30 days. That's right up there with the national average of 55.3% but Iowans are showing much higher levels of binge drinking.

"Iowa is one of seven states in the nation that rank highest for the percentage of adults who binge drink," said Julie Hibben, Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator at the Iowa Department of Public Health. "Binge drinking among Iowa youth is also an issue. Twenty-one percent of high school junior boys and 18 percent of junior girls report that they binge drank in the last 30 days."
