ROCK ISLAND, IL – Plans to open Wal-Mart in Rock Island are underway. The city is working with the company to make sure everything goes as planned.

There is still no estimated time of when Wal-Mart will open its doors, but Dennis Pauley, Mayor of Rock Island, says they are expecting all current businesses to close by fall. The city wants to start construction by late-fall.

Pauley says the project is on track. Wal-Mart will be built at Watch Tower Plaza on 11th Street. There are only a few stores left in the area that will be moving out for Wal-Mart's move-in.

The city has already completed the paperwork and sent it to Wal-Mart. Now, they are waiting for Wal-Mart to complete their end of the deal.

Dollar General and Hill and Valley Bakery are some of the stores left. Otherwise, it's a strip of empty stores and signs saying "Closed for Wal-Mart", "Moving", even a sign that says "We apologize for the inconvenience. Wal-Mart won't."

Many Rock Island residents say the area has been deserted for far too long. They hope Wal-Mart will bring a much-needed boost back into the neighborhood.

Shanice Butler, resident, says, "There are a lot of empty buildings around here as you can see. It's just bad, so this Wal-Mart would help." She adds, "We need it because it's hard to get a job around here. Any jobs that we can offer would be really good."

Another resident agrees. Max Suggs says, "It's like a ghost town, so it would be nice to see it fill up again."

Mayor Pauley says the city has been working with Wal-Mart on a daily basis, setting apart 15 million dollars for the project. Wal-Mart is expected to buy the property for 4.5 million dollars.

Pauley says, "What it's going to do is stimulate the neighborhood for more growth. It's going to bring in more business, more jobs, more retail tax and make it better for all the citizens of Rock Island."
