R.I. Co. Voters Will Decide On Tax Increase For Hope Creek Care

Posted: Updated:

Rock Island County Voters will get to decide whether to pay more in taxes to help support the Hope Creek Care nursing home.

The Rock Island County Board voted last night to ask voters to raise the tax levy from .1 percent to .25 percent on property. It would be a temporary increase, lasting only four years.

Board members say the cost of caring for the sick and elderly has increased because of new, unfunded mandates and because of reduced reimbursements from the state. Officials have reported the county loses about $17,000 each day to operate the facility.

The tax increase question will appear on the November ballot.
