The YWCA Executive Director Carol Fitzgerald announced the closing of the preschool in Sterling this May in the following letter to the editor:

In May, after 50 years, the YWCA of the Sauk Valley will be closing the doors of our preschool.  Teacher retirements, multiplying state requirements, and economics have combined to make it challenging for us to continue providing the highest standard of preschool possible . . . and we cannot be satisfied with less.

All of us at the YWCA would like to thank the community for its support throughout the years and for entrusting us with so many wonderful children.  It has truly been an honor to be a part of so many families' lives.

The YWCA, locally and nationwide, has been a pioneer in many ways.   We are very proud to have launched this program in the 1960s, a time when preschool opportunities were extremely limited.  We enjoyed our entire 50-year history of providing the community with a top-notch, child- centered program, and we thank all those who have been a part of it.  We are grateful to have touched the lives of hundreds of children and their families.

We plan to hold, at the end of the school year, a celebration of our 50 years, and we hope many of our former students, of all ages, and their families will plan to attend.
