Teen Accused Of Setting Muscatine Apartment On Fire

Posted: Updated:

A teenager is facing serious charges in connection with an apartment fire in Muscatine. According to the Muscatine County Attorney, 16-year-old Benjamin Phillips is accused of setting the fire to the two unit apartment building in the 400 block of Pine St. One unit was vacant, the other was occupied. The one person home at the time was able to get out and call for help.

About 30 firefighters were called to respond to the fire on April 10, 2014 at 2:13 a.m. Smoke was coming from the basement and under the eaves. Due to the type of construction and difficulty to get access, the fire quickly spread throughout the building. One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

After an investigation, Phillips was arrested and charged with first degree arson and burglary. He will be tried in adult court.
