SouthPark Mall in Moline will have a groundbreaking Thursday at 4 p.m. to kick off some major renovations.

The renovations will include updating store fronts and mall entrances and demolishing the former Sears and the food court area.

Senior Property Manager Kathy Jurgens said the smaller mall will benefit area shoppers.

“We see a right size mall for the area,” said Jurgens. “We see enhanced store fronts. We see beautiful new entrances coming to the mall, new landscaping, a new parking lot and just upgrading all throughout the center.”

Jurgens and Moline city officials have said the changes for the mall could attract new retailers.

“We're working on some new possibilities for new stores coming here,” said Jurgens. “I think once the building gets going and once they start seeing all the new enhancements we have, we have an excellent opportunity to see new retailers come to the SouthPark Mall.”

The mall’s marketing manager said the staging area for Thursday’s groundbreaking will be next to Gulliver’s Travel and the public is invited to attend.
