Fire Breaks out Overnight at Sivyer Steel

Posted: Updated:

The Bettendorf Fire Department said everyone is ok at Sivyer Steel Tuesday morning after an overnight fire.

Firefighters responded to the call at about 11:30 p.m. Monday night.

An official with the fire department said there were a lot of flames inside the Bettendorf steel plant when firefighters got there. An official with the department said molten metal had spilled onto a conveyor belt and caused some nearby wood to catch fire.

Because molten metal was involved, firefighters had to use sand to put out the flames rather than water. The fire department said it took about an hour to extinguish the fire.

The workers who had been near the fire were checked for injuries, but the fire department said they were all ok and that the plant would be open for business as usual Tuesday.
