Univ. Of Illinois Extension Announces Summer Camps

4-H Special Interest Clubs and Summer Camps!
Want to learn by doing? University of Illinois Extension 4-H is offering youth and teens several opportunities to find a new lifelong hobby or improve a skill. The spring Special Interest Clubs including quilting, goats, fishing and cooking while summer camps will cover camping, robotics, horses, science, cooking and video/filmmaking.   You don't have to be in 4-H to participate.  To join there is a yearly $20 4-H program fee. Once that fee has been paid, youth may participate in as many 4-H clubs or camps as they would like by just paying any associated supply fees. A limited number of program and supply fee waivers are available for families in need. Teen Food Challenge, Tuesdays, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. April 22 - May 27 for teens ages 14 - 18, Rock Island County Extension, Milan, IL
This is a unique competition where teens will get to use their creative ideas to "invent" their own tasty treats.  Each week a new challenge will be put forth with the teen chef needing to make a dish using select ingredients provided.  The club will prepare them to participate in a local food challenge competition!   There is a $20 supply fee for this club. For youth ages 14-18. The club will meet at Rock Island County Extension, 321 West 2nd Ave., Milan, IL.

Quilting Club, Saturdays, 9 - 11:30 a.m., April 26 - June 14, Rock Island County Extension, Milan, IL
Quilting Club, Saturdays, 9 - 11:30 a.m., July 19 - August 23, Henry County Farm Bureau, Cambridge, IL
There are two different Quilting Clubs, one in Milan, IL and one in Cambridge, IL where youth ages 10 - 18 can learn to quilt and sew!  They'll get to choose color coordinating fabric, cut material, learn machine piecing, machine quilting, and binding. They will also make a baby quilt as a community service project for a local family in need and test their skills by making a Modern Quilt. If possible, participants should bring their own sewing machine, but machines can be provided if they don't have access to one. The first meeting is mandatory. There is a $5 supply fee plus the cost of material.

Sports Fishing, Saturdays, May 24 - June 28 from 9 - 11 a.m. Aledo, IL
If you like to fish, here's the club for youth ages 8 - 15.  Each week they'll learn about the different techniques used in fishing, including safety, angling skills, tying fishing knots and hooks, characteristics of fish, importance of water quality, and an explanation of fishing regulations. There is a $5 supply fee and youth will need to bring rod, reel and a few other fishing supplies from a list that will be provided. Registration for this club closes on May 9.  This club will meet at local ponds around the Aledo, IL area.  The first meeting will be at the Aledo Central Park.

Goat Club, Saturdays, 2 - 3:30 p.m., May 25 - July 6, (Goat Show is at 9 a.m., Thursday, July 10) Club meets at Mercer County Fairgrounds, Aledo, IL
Would you like to learn about and care for a goat and then show it at the Fair?  Even if you don't have one, don't worry - you can lease a goat for $1 and it will be brought to the fairgrounds for your meeting each week.  You'll explore how to judge and select goats, feed and manage goats, fit, and show goats while perfecting life-long skills such as decision making. Bring your own goat or lease one for just $1.  This club is limited to 15 youth, ages 8-18. Registration closes on May 2, so don't delay - register today!

Robotics Camp, June 23 - 27, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. for 5th - 8th graders
Find out how robots are important in the world around us, build a Lego robot and program it to complete some simple tasks. The camp will be held at Rock Island County Extension, 321 West 2nd Ave., Milan, IL. ($10 supply fee).  

Camping/Survival Camp,  June 16 - 21,  4 - 5 p.m., for ages 10 - 18  Held at Rock Island Arsenal - (On June 21 camp will be noon - 4 p.m.)  
Learn different techniques to use when going camping in the great outdoors including survival tips and more!  This camp will take place at the Rock Island Arsenal.  ($5 military/$15 non-military for supply fees).

Horse Experience Camp, June 30 - July 2, 9 a.m. - noon, for 5th - 8th graders, Meets at Schoen's Friendship Farm, Milan, IL
Explore the world of horses. Youth will learn what it takes to groom, halter, and ride horses. This camp will allow participants to get up close with live horses each day. This camp is designed for beginners. The camp will be held at New Kingdom Trailriders Barn at Schone's Friendship Farm, Milan, IL. ($30 supply fee).

Science Explorers Camp, July 7 - 11, 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Colona, IL for youth in 4 - 6th grades
Discover all the science around you. Learn about science and nature with hands on activities and science experiments. The camp will be tentatively held at the Activity Center 617-8th Street, Colona, IL. ($45 supply fee).    

Adventure Camp; July 14-18, 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Rock Island Conservation Club, Milan, IL For 6-8th graders
Learn what it takes to be a true adventurer outside. You will face challenges inspired by the popular movies and book series: The Hunger Games. The camp will be at the Rock Island Conservation Club, 2421 Big Island Road, Milan, IL. ($75 supply fee).  

Cooking Camp; June, 21-25, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. for those entering 4th - 6th grades
Challenge your skills in the kitchen! Learn the basics of preparing recipes and discover how to make a variety of dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. The camp will be held at Rock Island County Extension, 321 West 2nd Ave., Milan, IL. ($30 supply fee)

Video/Filmmaking Camp; July 21-25, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. for 7th - 9th grades
See the world of video and filmmaking. You'll use various techniques and types of equipment to film, edit, and produce your own short video clips. The camp will be held at Rock Island County Extension, 321 West 2nd Ave., Milan, IL. ($10 supply fee).
