Dozen Burglaries In Viola, Alexis, Illinois

Posted: Updated:

Police are searching for suspects in a string of burglaries reported in west-central Illinois overnight. In Viola, Police Chief Tom Mulder said seven businesses were broken into. All the break-ins occurred between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. while the businesses were closed.

Mulder says the businesses were ransacked and they are still compiling a list of what may have been stolen. There is also damage to entryways, doors and windows of the businesses. Some of the businesses had surveillance cameras and police are reviewing the video. They are working with the Illinois State Police Crime Investigation Unit as well as the Mercer County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities in Warren County are involved in the investigation to see if the crimes are related to five burglaries in the city of Alexis, also overnight.

Mulder also said that seven burglaries in one night is unheard of in Viola, a town of 950 people. He says they are comparing notes with other agencies and ask residents to report anything they may have seen or heard.
