Staying Safe Around Area Dams

Posted: Updated:
The capsizing of a boat in the Mississippi River, along with the rescue and recovery, has many urging safety around locks and dams in our area.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers, when water drops over a dam, a condition known as a "hydraulic roller" occurs. When a person or an object, such as a boat, gets caught in this roller, it is almost impossible to get out.

Authorities at the incident are urging people to stay out of the water.

Earlier, we spoke to an Illinois DNR officer who says that with the water conditions as bad as they are right now nobody should be in the river if it can be avoided.
