Update: The Iowa Department of Public Safety has released more information about a standoff in Durant Thursday night.

In a news release, the IDPS says Initial reports indicated a female was screaming for help and was possibly injured.

That's when officers from multiple departments responded.

They found that 42-year-old Scott Douglas Oetzel had barricaded himself inside his former home in Durant.

When officers entered the home, they found him dead of an apparent self-inflicted shotgun wound.

The female resident managed to escape after being assaulted by Oetzel.

She was treated and released from the hospital.

Two people are hurt after a standoff overnight in Durant, Iowa.

It happened in the 800 block of Eighth Street just before 11:00 p.m. On Thursday, May 8, 2014.

Durant police responded after someone reported hearing gunshots in the home.

The standoff lasted just over an hour.

Police say a man hit a woman with a gun before harming himself.

Two children under the age of 15 were home at the time.

One child left the home and police went in to get the other.

During the standoff police told neighbors to go into their basements for shelter.

The woman was taken to Genesis East Hospital in Davenport. There is no word on her condition.

Five agencies and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the incident.

Durant and state police will continue the investigation.
