Winter Not Kind To Colonel Davenport Home

Posted: Updated:

The historic Colonel Davenport Home is in rough shape.

The winter was not kind. An ice dam formed on the front porch and water soaked into the interior wall.

In March, a volunteer heard the crack of the floor joists breaking in the upstairs second bedroom. It had to be quickly braced but now they have discovered floor beams that are rotten.

The head of the foundation says insurance will not cover the work.

"We will be writing some grants and we're more than happy to take donations," Judy Tumbleson said. "The welcome to the island had already given them $1,000 to begin the work probably cover taking up the floor and putting in a brace.

The work will delay the opening of the home but they hope to have the start around May 22.
