Mighty Musicians

Posted: Updated:

His hands move gracefully across the piano keyboard. Josh Dee is playing Over the Rainbow.

Music teacher Done Estes watches with pride.

In Don’s basement music studio in Bettendorf, Colin Fye plays the Theme From The Titanic.

Colin says it helps his confidence grow stronger.

Matt Shelton is a composer. He wrote Beautiful Song. It’s Matt’s way of expressing his emotions.

Don Estes is thrilled to have the three young men as students. He says the students can set goals, achieve goals, work at it, and do whatever it takes.

Understand, Colin, Matt, and Josh have autism. However, in the music studio, the goal is to achieve. Have fun. Autism takes a back seat.

Estes is teaching students how a song works. How to play it, recognize repeating patterns, and looking for any themes or trends.

Josh reads music. Colin plays by ear. Estes says the group progresses at a speed which is comfortable for them, and inspiring for us!

Mighty musicians!
