Muscatine In Running For $10 Million Fund

Posted: Updated:
MUSCATINE, IA – Ten Iowa cities applied for a new tax program to fund district projects in March. Three have moved to the next round, including Muscatine and its three-part project.

This three-part project has a total estimated cost of $41 million. Muscatine Downtown Investors have applied for a $10 million fund from the Iowa Economic Development Authority.

Their plan includes a new hotel, convention center, and a multi-surface parking ramp. All would be connected by sky bridges to the existing Pearlview Condominiums.

On Thursday, Ann Meeker of Muscatine Downtown Investors will be making a presentation to the board, who will make the decision by late-June.

Tom and Ann Meeker have been working on the project for five years. They say this is just the boost the city needs. Ann Meeker says, “This is the last piece that will make Muscatine a destination and enable the growth we need for our workforce and our companies, and to make a community that you want to live in.”

Muscatine native Piper Beason owns a shop across from the proposed event/convention center. She says Muscatine has many hidden gems that hopefully more people will discover with this project.

Beason says, “It will be fantastic for the city. I’ve always thought of how I can get people to actually come to Muscatine […] and if that works then great! I’m all for it.”

The city of Muscatine and the Muscatine Convention and Visitor’s Bureau are excited for this possible funding. They hope Ann Meeker’s final presentation on Thursday will solidify the $10 million deal from the state.

Muscatine Mayor DeWayne Hopkins says, “The city is in total support of this process. In fact, the city administrator is going along to be part of the presentation.”

Hannah Wilke from the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau says, “It’s a great feeling to have this opportunity to host a lot of people in Muscatine and right in the historic Muscatine with so many businesses.”

As for Tom and Ann Meeker, they feel confident in their plan and presentation. Ann Meeker says, “We’re going into this with the best application we can make and we have every confidence that they will make a good and fair decision.”
