Informational Picket Outside Alcoa

Posted: Updated:

Reps from Alcoa and the United Steelworkers Union have been bargaining in Pittsburgh for a couple weeks but workers are concerned about how contract negotiations are going.

Dozens of Alcoa workers took part in an informational picket outside the Davenport Works plant.

Contracts for thousands of employees across the US and in the Quad Cities are set to expire at midnight. Alcoa and union leaders both say they want to come to an agreement. Alcoa says its proposal includes wage increases and comprehensive benefits coverage but the union says it has issues with the healthcare proposal for future employees.

"By being out here today we're at least able to inform our members, we're able to show alcoa, that we're standing solid, we're not gonna back down," financial secretary of Local 105, Mike Nicholas said.

"We just hope that at the end of the evening tomorrow night we end up with a fair, competitive contract," Alcoa spokesperson John Riches said.

Both sides say they hope to reach a deal in order to avoid a strike.
