Local organizations are creating a dialogue about drug abuse and mental health issues.

Next week is National Prevention Week and professionals and community leaders met to discuss substance abuse among young people in our community.

Organizers are working to spread the word about issues affecting teens including prescription drug and alcohol abuse while working to promote prevention programs across the QCA.

"With downturns in the economy over the last ten years, a lot of prevention programs have kind of fallen on hard times or by the wayside," assistant to regional superintendent at RICO Regional Office of Education Clayton Naylor said. so, we're trying to get people starting to think more about prevention activities."

"We are in the schools, we are in the community through coalitions, we are in the workplace so that parents have an idea of the risk factors and what to look for and what's going on with kids today," Prevention First communications manager Ruthie Gergeni said.

There will be a number of events throughout the community addressing prevention services for area teens and families.
