Barbershop Dog

Posted: Updated:

Hang around Jay Ledford’s Moline barbershop, and you’re certain to meet one of his pet pals.

Jay’s dog is a two year old yellow lab named Doz.

Ledford says the dog is part of the show at Cut Rite.

When the mail arrives, the dog delivers. Jay has taught his four legged friend to fetch the mail and bring it to him.

Ledford taught Doz to do a number of tricks.

Jay has been a barber for fifty seven years. He likes to have fun at the shop. He wears a referee shirt, blows the whistle, and jokingly reminds people who is the boss.

The barbershop also resembles a museum. Flooring came from Moline’s Wharton Field House.

Hanging from the walls are deer, a shark, marlin, pictures, planes, and boxing gloves.

One hundred years ago, the building was a gas station. Today, barber Joe Shadden, who works alongside Jay, calls it a conversation piece. He says customers come in, enjoy the surroundings, and never see the same thing twice.

Many of the items were given to Jay from friends.

Doz will always remain top dog in the barbershop. At least that’s the “buzz.”
