A Bettendorf, Iowa family is safe thanks to a stranger's observation.

A passerby called police about a house fire early Friday morning, May 16, 2014.

When police arrived on scene, they were able to get the family, who were still asleep, out of the home, unharmed.

The Fire happened around 1:00 a.m. in the 3200 block of Maple Crest Road.

Firefighters arrived shortly after police and could see flames coming out of the roof.

Crews then had to attack the fire from the inside and outside of the home.

The family pet was also rescued.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
