Fire Fighters More Than That in Davenport

Posted: Updated:
Fighting towering flames, saving buildings and lives....

All in a days work for a Davenport fireman.

Now, that job is expanding - helping them save more lives.

This week, they and more other emergency responders are being celebrated, during EMS week in Iowa.

For 23 years, Captain Todd Whitchelo has been fighting fires in Davenport.

And he says many times, people misunderstand his full job.

"They see the ambulance go but a lot of times, the don't see that fire truck right behind or even before it," says Captain Whitchelo.

On board every Davenport fire truck, you'll find paramedic kits and defibrillators.

Even a CPR machine.

"A lot of times, our fire engines are staffed with paramedics," says Whitchelo. "We get there, we have the defibrillators, the drugs, the knowledge to handle almost any medical situation we come across."

In fact, fire trucks in Davenport tell a story of lives the firemen have saved.

A lightning bolt with a sticker on a fire engine, stands for saving somebody from cardiac arrest... And a stork, standing for a baby delivered.

"What we do, with our presence in the community, can literally be the difference between life and death."
