This Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the swim season for many in the QCA.

A new survey from the Red Cross finds more than 40 percent of people who say they can swim, actually can't swim well enough to save their own lives!

The Red Cross says a few basic skills are critical if you're going to be around water.

For example; treading water for about a minute, getting out of the pool without a ladder and swimming 25 yards without stopping.

Those are just some of the things the Red Cross is trying to teach thousands of people this summer as it launches a new "100 Years of Swim Lessons" campaign.

Along with the campaign, the Red Cross also just released a new swim safety app for smart phones and tablets.

Betsey Pratt with the American Red Cross of the Quad Cities Area says parents can use it as a tool to help with their kids' swim lessons, something the organization says is important to enroll your kids in.

"People need to know how to swim. They need those swimming techniques, but they also need to know their limitations. What they can and can't do in the water and where to be safe. And that really is what the American Red Cross swim lessons are for."
