If you're heading out of town for Memorial Day weekend be ready for clogged highways. There will be extra eyes from law enforcement to go along with the near record number of Americans expected to travel.

For a lot of people this will be the first travel weekend of the year. AAA estimates 36.1 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day. Extra officers will be out too making sure you're following all the rules of the road old and new.

The long, harsh Winter may be what is encouraging more Americans to start summer travel season with a Memorial day getaway. Lower prices at the pump may also be a factor. "It might take a little longer to get to your destination. Please make sure you leave with plenty of time to get there. We understand everybody has a very full social schedule," said Trooper Jason Wilson, Illinois State Police.

Many agencies plan extra patrols to crack down on the traditional issues like seat belt violations, speeding, drunk driving and distracted driving.

Since the hands free cell phone law took effect at the start of the year, that's another thing Illinois officers will be watching out for.
