The jury could get the quadruple murder case against Nicholas Sheley as early as tomorrow. And today was a contentious day in court... the judge, prosecution and defense went back and forth over several issues and it took up a lot of time.

They were hoping to end testimony today, but now that will have to wait until tomorrow.

The biggest issue: Sheley's defense attorney Jeremy Karlin argued he couldn't cross examine a prosecution DNA witness without bringing up the Missouri murders Sheley's accused of committing. Karlin argued it would be a risk telling the jury about another set of murders. So he questioned the expert without the jury.

The judge and state prosecutors say it was a waste of time.

"Don't tell me that you're worried about crossing the line, based on what that offer of proof was," said Chief Judge Jeffrey O'Connor.

After a short break, they brought the jury back in and did the cross examination anyway.

Earlier today, a friend of Holly Sheley took the stand. Holly is Nick Sheley's ex-wife.

The friend was at her home with Holly, when Nick Sheley came over, un-announced.

"Nick Sheley walked in the back door," said friend of Holly Sheley Jessine Mondragon. "He said, 'Holly you're coming with me. Jessine, one hour. He said, one hour (gestures with finger across her throat)."

Mondragon said she didn't see Nick Sheley again that night, but went to pick up Holly. She said Holly was holding a pair of jeans, the seat of the pants soaked in blood.

Mondragon said she was afraid that night, but didn't call the police because she knew Nick Sheley was "basically on the run"

Prosecutors say at that time in 2008, Sheley was wanted for the murder of Russell Reed.

Sheley is on trial accused of killing four people in a Rock Falls apartment in 2008.
