Credit Island Lodge Vote Tabled

Posted: Updated: May 28, 2014 11:51 PM
Some debate for Davenport council members at Wednesday night's meeting. Many are concerned, not only about the price to rebuild Credit Island Lodge, but also the timeline. That has been pushed back as city leaders wait for insurance money. And so has the vote to approve the contract to rebuild the structure, devastated by fire one year ago.
The construction price tag is just under $1.5 million dollars, almost $300,000 more than what aldermen expected insurance to pay out. But city staffers say that's not necessarily a problem.

"The statement of value we have, that's important in determining what building was worth, that's approximately $1.2 million," Finance Director Brandon Wright said. "The policy that we have states we can receive up to 135 percent of that amount in a rebuild situation. That puts us somewhere above $1.6 million for this."

Wright seems to be optimistic, telling aldermen, "We do have relative assurance that things are moving well." But aldermen are not ready to commit. Bill Edmond, said, "I'm perfectly willing to make a motion that we table this because we do not have the funding available."

Jeff Justin agreed. "I'm not gonna support this unless we have funding for it."

And Gene Meeker, also wants to wait. "I would concur, to maybe delay this, quite frankly until we actually know. Times are tough right now."
The city council, voted to table the contract vote, with just one lone dissenter. Alderman Ray Ambrose says staffers can re-examine the numbers and volunteers can do some work. "A lot of the stuff can be done by work with the Friends of Credit Island. They've been waiting a long time. And I think it's kind of unfair that they continue to wait for the Lodge, for even the construction project to start."
At this point, they'll be waiting for it to be finished as well. The city's Finance Director says he expects to hear from the insurance company by the end of the week. Once that happens, council members can vote on the construction contract and the work could start. But we do know, the original Halloween deadline is no longer realistic. The City's Public Works Director says we are looking at a finished Lodge now, in time for a Christmas Celebration.
