The Knox County Sheriff's Department is warning people about  thieves that are going after something people may throw away. Officers say they have received several reports from Orange and Hawk Creek Townships that someone is stealing trash set out for pick-up.

According to a news release, a witness reported seeing an older, red passenger car, possibly a Ford, leaving the areas from where the trash was taken.

Sheriff's officials say taking trash that has been set out for pick-up is not considered theft under Illinois law; however, trash is often taken to obtain personal information for fraudulent purposes. That's why authorities remind people to make sure any documents with bank, credit card or other personal information should be properly disposed of to prevent identity theft.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact the Knox County Sheriff's Department at (309) 345-3733.
