From kennel owners to veterinarians, we've been hearing about dog illness spreading in our area.

With more people and dogs being outside, those bugs are spreading faster, causing some vets to offer a warning... When you are out with your dog, pay attention.

Because more interaction, could mean more illness.

"Right now, most of us are dealing with infectious brachial bronchitis by bacteria or viruses," says local vet Dr. Scott Sandeman. "Dog flu is actually a new disease. Influenza is something we may see more of down the road."

Sandeman adds that less than 2% or his sick dogs actually have the dog flu... But others say it's much higher than that.

But no matter what illness it might be, they all agree, it's spreading fast.

"We consider them a social disease," he adds. "They are highly contagious so we see them in places where dogs have been together. Dog parks, grooming facilities. Any place where dogs are together, there's a pretty good chance someone may be incubating a particular disease at a particular time."

Some symptoms to look for include a harsh cough from your dog, or lethargic behavior.

Also, a drastic change in diet can be a sign that your dog is sick.

Vets say when that happen, keep your dog away from others, so a sickness isn't spread, and your dog has a chance to recover.
