Falcon Banded In Davenport

Posted: Updated:
There has been a tragic turn of events to this story. MidAmerican Energy confirms that after the morning banding, the chick was returned to the nesting box with its family. Later in the afternoon, the chick fell out of the box to its death.

A family of falcons are under special scrutiny in Davenport. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources banded one Peregrine falcon chick at their home on top of the MidAmerican Energy building.

Their parents first built the nest in 2003 and return every spring to lay eggs and raise their young. The DNR bands the chicks so they can monitor and study their movements. Despite mom's protests, the band was successfully placed on the chick, named Marta, during a banding ceremony Tuesday.
