Quinn Bill Requires Safety Training In Illinois

Posted: Updated:

Illinois high school students will be required to get training on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other safety skills under a bill Governor Pat Quinn signed.

The new law also requires training on defibrillators. It all takes effect for the 2014-2015 school year.

The legislation was prompted by a paramedic whose daughter had a heart condition.

"A family from St. Charles, Illinois, their 18-year-old daughter suffered cardiac arrest while she practiced with a drill team," St. Rep Daniel Burke said. "There was an AED device in the high school but what's most tragic was no one knew how to use the device."

Fire departments would go out and train teachers who would then train students. It will be a free service for most Illinois schools.
