70 Happy Years Together For One Local Couple

Seventy years is quite a milestone for anything. For a marriage it's a rare and special thing. That's how many years local couple Ken and Lois Roll have been going strong. Talking with them on their anniversary Thursday they're clearly just as in love as they were back in 1944.

Both 90 years old now, Ken and Lois Roll met in high school. He was from DeWitt and she was from near Grand Mound.

"I dumped him a couple of times but he never went away," said Lois, "I just remember he did ask my dad for my hand."

After graduating high school he went into the Army. They tied the knot in North Carolina on June 5th, 1944. The day after their wedding known as D-Day would go in the history books as a turning point in World War II. A few months later Ken, a paratrooper, would go overseas. After he came back their life continued together. Three children, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren later and here they are celebrating the last seven decades with a loving family.

They say a long happy marriage like theirs takes a lot of kindness and respect. Ken says "We were always there weren't we?" Lois responds, "I guess that was it and I guess you overlook some things."

Ken picked up a few tricks along the way. "Happy wife, happy life," said Lois. And so they've built a love to last a lifetime.
