Local Woman Finalist in Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest

Posted: Updated:

When you think of the fabric used to make wedding dresses, satin, silk and chiffon may come to mind. But, a national contest has one local woman using toilet tissue, hoping to win a big prize.

Over the years, Julie Haas, of Clinton, has designed countless wedding cakes and organized events, and she says those experiences made her feel comfortable enough to take on a new challenge.

"I was surfing three years ago and came about Cheap Chic weddings. They had this contest sponsored by Charmin and they wanted people to send in wedding dresses made out of tissue paper," Haas recalled.

That's right - Toilet tissue.

Haas entered the contest, became a finalist, and lost.

Now, three years later, she's a finalist again, and is hopeful she can win this time around.

"I love making something out of nothing that just is my core. For me it is taking something that most people see as non-usable or innate and making something beautiful," Haas said.

She says this year's dress took over 200 hours to make.

"It's very tedious. Very time consuming," she said.

She used 28 giant rolls of toilet tissue for a dress covered with more than 800 rosettes. Each rosette took about 15 minutes to create.

Haas says she hopes the time she invested in creating the dress shows through in her final product.

She also says the experience has taught her a very valuable lesson:

"Don't ever look at something and think that it can't become something else."

If you'd like to vote for Julie Haas and her dress, go to the Cheap Chic Wedding website and select "Vote for Julie".

The contest ends Thursday.

The winner will receive $10,000 and will appear on the Today Show to show off their creation.
