Officials in Jo Daviess County are on the lookout for a man impersonating a police officer.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a motorist was driving west on US 20 around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, 2014.

When the motorist was near Williams Drive in rural Galena, Ill., he was signaled to pull over by a vehicle behind him with red and blue flashing lights.

The motorist says he was approached by a man from the vehicle.

Officials say as the encounter went on, the motorist asked the man for identification and when he didn’t show him any, the motorist drove off.

Moments later, the motorist found a Galena police officer and reported the incident.

The suspect vehicle is described as a black Buick Century with Iowa registration and red/blue lights in the grill and passenger side visor.

The suspect is described as a black male wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.

Officials say the suspect was reportedly in possession of a sidearm in a holster

They say “false presentation of a police officer while armed” is a class three felony and ask anyone with information to call the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office at 815-777-2141 or 1-800-373-7838.
