Some local girls got their chance to see what it's like to be a police officer with a K-9 partner.

It's all part of the "Crime Time" STEM Camp program at Black Hawk College that lets girls explore the law enforcement field. They got a firsthand look at how one police officer works side by side with his non-human partner.

Organizers say it's a great way to get girls interested in the different types of work in the criminal justice field.

"I think that's a female thing, you know, we all love animals and the opportunity to work with an animal in a career is a really cool thing," said coordinator Jen Holldorf.

Throughout the camp, the girls will get to take part in hands on experiments including crime scenes, fingerprinting and collecting DNA.
