One man is dead after a pickup truck crashed into a tractor pulling farm equipment in McDonough County, Ill.

The accident happened around 4:38 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

Police say the driver of the pickup, 48-year-old Donald J. Hawkins of Monmouth, Ill., was headed northbound on U.S. 67 when he came upon the utility tractor driven by 86-year-old Robert D. Goodpasture of Good Hope, Ill., also heading northbound.

Police say the tractor was pulling a rotary hay rake and had just passed the intersection with CR 1800 North.

According to police, Hawkins was distracted and didn't see the tractor until it was too late.

Police say he tried to swerve into the left lane to avoid collision, but ended up hitting the hay rake being towed by the tractor.

The impact caused the tractor to swerve, which in turn threw Goodpasture from the vehicle.

He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later flown to the Peoria Hospital where he later died.

Hawkins and his two passengers were wearing seatbelts and were not injured in the crash.

He was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
