Construction Begins on Centennial Bridge

Posted: Updated:

Construction crews began work on the Centennial Bridge Wednesday morning. It marks the start of about three months’ worth of construction to do some much needed repairs, as the Illinois Department of Transportation has called them.

The work for now will all be under the bridge and will not impact drivers.

Lane closures aren’t scheduled to begin until after the Fourth of July holiday weekend, IDOT said.

However, IDOT says at least one lane will be open in both directions at all times. And all lanes will be open during peak drive times – from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

The real impact on the thousands of people who cross the Centennial every day won’t happen until sometime between July 28 and September 6. The bridge is scheduled to shut down completely for 35 days during that time for some major repairs.

Once the bridge reopens, there will be more lane closures throughout the month of September.

All the work should be done by early October, IDOT said.
