Rebuilding Credit Island Lodge Delayed

Posted: Updated:

DAVENPORT, IA --  Steve Swanson and his team are ready to rebuild the historic Credit Island Lodge. Born and raised in Davenport, he grew up playing golf and skating on the island.

"I spent time down there as a kid and we often times had family reunions at the lodge itself so this is a bit of a reunion for me personally," says Swanson.

Construction was supposed to kick off this week, but with rain and flooding, Swanson Construction was forced to delay their start.
Swanson says, "We're anxious to see the rain subside so we can get going on this project. Based on historical weather patterns, provided the weather starts receding here into this week, we can mobilize the first part of next week."

As a frequent flood zone, Davenport Public Works says they have planned for future rain seasons with flood vents. Mike Clarke, Public Works Director, says, "The current lodge is susceptible to flooding. It has flooded several times in the past. Now in the future, the lodge will be reconstructed in such a away that it could accept the flood waters."

After the fire happened in May 2013, the city had to make a decision on whether to keep the lodge or tear it down entirely, but the emotional attachment was a feeling they couldn't cast away.

The original plan was to rebuild the lodge by Halloween 2014, but because of the rain season it is now tentatively delayed until Christmas.

For now, Swanson Construction and the city patiently wait for mother nature to subside. When it does, they'll be ready to rebuild for the future of Credit Island.
