A request for a new trial has been filed in Whiteside County Court by the attorney of Nicholas Sheley. On May 29, Sheley was convicted of killing four people in a Rock Falls apartment during a murderous rampage in the summer of 2008. The trial was held in Rock Island County on a change of venue.

On Thursday, June 26, 2014, attorney Jeremy Karlin requested a new trial based on a list of 49 issues, including moving the trial to Rock Island County, having cameras in the courtroom and that the judge fell asleep during testimony.

Sheley was accused of killing Brock Branson, Kylynna Blake, her two-year-old son, Dayan and a friend, Kenneth Ulve. Sheley has also been convicted of killing two other men during the same crime spree: Ronald Randall of Galesburg and Russell Reed of Sterling. All of the victims were beaten to death.
