On Thursday, June 26, 2014, attorney Jeremy Karlin requested a new trial based on a list of 49 issues, including moving the trial to Rock Island County, having cameras in the courtroom and that the judge fell asleep during testimony.

Sheley was accused of killing Brock Branson, Kylynna Blake, her two-year-old son, Dayan and a friend, Kenneth Ulve. Sheley has also been convicted of killing two other men during the same crime spree: Ronald Randall of Galesburg and Russell Reed of Sterling. All of the victims were beaten to death.
