Backwater Gamblers Celebrate 35 Years

Posted: Updated:

It's a big milestone for a local water ski show. The Backwater Gamblers are celebrating 35 years on the water.

Past and present members were meeting up Saturday for a reunion today in Rock Island to share memories and of course, break out the water skis.

The club puts on free shows and members compete in contests throughout the year, and they even helped break a Guinness world record for water skiing pyramids.

Organizers say the team doesn't plan to slow down any time soon.

"Normally, just to put the show on we have probably 65 skiers and about 35 people behind the scenes, so it's 100, 110 people every show," member Randy Thompson said. "It's a big operation to keep it going and we just keep growing every year it seems like."

The 150 members on the team range in age from one to 67.

You can catch one of their free shows on most Sunday and Wednesday nights starting at 6:30 p.m. in Rock Island on the Rock River.
