Residents Of East Moline's Watertown District Evacuated

Posted: Updated:
Residents of East Moline's Watertown district had to evacuate on Monday night due to flash flood waters.

One of the residents, Kent Strickland said the water came up fast.

"We just got inundated and by the time we realized how bad it was, the water was just constantly rising so fast we had to get out of there."

Residents were evacuated to the fire station but many returned to their homes that evening.

Cole O'Donnell, East Moline City Administrator says the flooding happened when Sugar Creek came out of its banks due to a pump failure.

"Our generators kicked in when the power went out but we believe lightening struck somewhere and disable the pumps. It then backed up water into the Watertown area, flooding many basements.
