River Bandits Play Despite Moat of Flood Water Surrounding Modern Woodman Park

Posted: Updated:

Despite the flood, area events are still going on in downtown Davenport. That includes the Mississippi Valley Blues Fest.

Modern Woodman Park is completely surrounded by a moat of flood waters, yet the Bandits will still play ball, thanks to flood gates keeping it dry inside.

"It's really neat how this flooding affects everything around it, but right here there's nothing going on," said 11 year old River Bandits Robert Murphy.

Robert said he can't wait to see the game tonight and to watch the only firework show in Davenport tonight.

"On the other side of these walls here are about 6 or 8 feet of Mississippi river water," said general manager for the River Bandits Andrew Chasser.

But what's keeping Modern Woodman safe and operational from the flood?

"The berms we have in outfield, those act as a natural barrier and then we also have, basically they are aluminum two-by-fours that have rubber on each side and they just build up walls, that are about 8 feet high all around the ball park," said Chesser.

Not 100% of the water is kept out, but the little bit that does get it in is pumped back out.

"At the gratitude of the city that they've come up with this awesome plan that we're still able to operate and function and provide fireworks and baseball games for all of our fans," said Chasser.

He said sandbags are now only a back-up option if too much of the Mississippi decides to seep in.

You can even take a look from up high of what the flood situation is like.

"The ferris wheel is completely dry and safe and will operating tonight as well," said Chasser.

And even though they're completely surrounded by water...

"We have the sprinklers running," said Chasser. "We still have to keep the field green."

Chasser said even though their parking lot is almost completely flooded, there's plenty of parking available throughout downtown Davenport, so you may have a to walk a bit.

He said the German Heritage Building parking lot is open for game parking and so is the Community Health building lot.

There will be golf carts available shuttling fans back and forth tonight.
