Baby drowns in backyard pool

Posted: Updated:
LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

Galvin Lee Paul was three weeks from celebrating his first birthday when the unimaginable occurred.

Friday night the 11-month-old baby boy left a house on Puritan Lane through an open door and fell into a swimming pool, the Lakeland Police Department said.

A preliminary police investigation revealed there were at least four adults at the house at the time of the drowning.

Galvin's parents, Brandon Paul, 18, and Samantha Holt, 17, were in different locations at the house when the incident occurred, a Lakeland police report states. Paul was supposed to be watching Galvin at the time.

Paul and an unidentified friend were playing pool in the room where Galvin was, the report states. Paul left the room, leaving the baby with the friend. The child was left alone when the friend went to use the restroom.

When Paul returned to the room, he did not see the baby. During a search, he spotted the child in the swimming pool.

Paul and his friend attempted to revive the baby boy using CPR and called for help. They continued cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived and took the child to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:15 p.m.

The case is under investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine an official cause of death.

Galvin would have been one on July 26.
