Two people are dead after a head-on collision on Highway 61 in Louisa County.

The accident happened near mile marker 75, about five miles north of Grandview, Iowa around 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2014.

Police say a car driven by 22-year-old Daniel Johnson of Naperville, Ill. was headed northbound on 61 when it crossed the centerline into the southbound lane.

According to officials, this was possibly an attempt to pass another vehicle, but in doing so, Johnson's  car came right into the path of a southbound pickup truck.

The pickup was pulling a utility trailer and was driven by 64-year-old Richard Bryant of Wapello, Iowa.

Police say both drivers took evasive action by steering toward the southbound shoulder, where both collided head-on.

Both drivers died from their injuries.

A passenger in Bryant's truck, 60-year-old Ruth Bryant, was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals by Medforce.

Her condition is not known.

The accident remains under investigation.
