Flood Cleanup To Begin In Davenport; East Village Impacted By Detour

Posted: Updated:

The Mississippi River is still at major flood stage in the Quad Cities. While most flood protection areas are still being monitored Davenport crews are beginning to shift gears into cleanup mode. Anyone impacted by the high water is looking forward to that in the coming days.

The beginning of July is usually a pretty busy time for shops in the Village of East Davenport. The streets have seen tons of traffic in the last week or so thanks to the detour away from flooded River Drive. But instead of more customers coming in many places are seeing a bit of a drop off as they wait for the water to do just that.

"Most of our local customers once they hear river drive is closed tend to avoid River Drive so it's definitely I think impacting us negatively instead of positively," said Kim Wessel, owner of Calla.

She thinks people are either frustrated or unsure of the detour. Many local customers are just driving right through. There have been some new faces though.

"I'm finding most of our customers right now are visiting the area and doing this route and finding us," said Wessel.

Public Works Director Mike Clarke says flood protection will now start to come down and roads will gradually reopen. Many areas also need to be cleared of debris. "It will take as long as the river takes to come back into the bank because we're going to be chasing it all the way. Plan on 2 1/2 weeks," said Clarke.

East Village business owners are happy to know access to River Drive near them will be much sooner.

"You just go with the flow and know sooner or later the water is going to go down," said Tom Lagomarcino.

This season, public works officials say flood protection costs for Davenport are well over $300,000.
