One was in the Navy. The other a Marine.

Tucked inside of a former elementary school in Galesburg is a military museum.

The James Stockdale Military Museum honors the Navy Admiral who grew up in nearby Abingdon.

Stockdale was a combat pilot who was shot down over North Vietnam in 1965. Stockdale was held as a prisoner of war for more than seven years.

During that time he was beaten and tortured.  However, he refused to surrender. Stockdale later received the Congressional Medal of Honor for not giving in to the enemy.

Captain Robert Dunlap was Admiral Stockdale’s cousin. Dunlap was also from the area.

President Truman presented the Marine with the Medal of Honor for his heroism at Iwo Jima during World War Two.

The Stockdale family donated hundreds of personal items over the years. Included are photos, awards, personal letters and a mannequin which resembles

Admiral Stockdale.

Military uniforms are on display. The American Flag which flew over the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin is featured in the museum. American Jesse Owens captured four gold medals in track and field.

Outside, an M-60 tank is on display. It was the primary armor weapon during the Vietnam War.

VFW Post 2257 houses the museum. The museum also has a military library and research room.

Hours are 9-4 on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Admission is free.

Military veterans Mike Lummis, Dan Jacobs, and Wes Wilson are volunteers at the museum.
