Bettendorf Residents Celebrate Thanksgiving in July

The Thanksgiving in July Community-Wide Food Drive wraps up in Bettendorf this weekend and organizers say they’re well on their way to reaching their goal of collecting 3,000lbs of food.

Bettendorf resident Jeff Herzberg decided to get a group together to start the food drive in the Quad Cities after seeing its success in Iowa City.

Herzberg and the other food drive committee members chose Bettendorf as the pilot city for the program. The Bettendorf Community Center food pantry, St. James Food Pantry and the food pantry at First Baptist Church in Bettendorf

The drive comes at a time when donations are lower than during the holiday season and need is high – particularly because kids are out of school and are unable to have access to the food they would normally have there.

To help, people can make donations at Hy-Vee on Devils Glen, Fareway on Belmont, K&K True Value Hardware on 18th, the YMCA on Tanglefoot and the Isle of Capri.

Donations will then be collected between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at Faye’s Field parking lot near the Family Museum. Volunteers will load the food, weigh it and deliver it to the three food pantries.

People are asked to donate non-perishable food items such as canned fruit, peanut butter, rice, pasta and juice boxes. Herzberg said when food pantries can have more foods like these, they can spend more money on more nutritious, yet perishable food, to help people in the community.
