Today RAGBRAI participants from the QCA packed up their bikes for a long journey across the state.

A semi-trailer will take 283 bikes across the state to Rock Valley, Iowa where RAGBRAI will begin this year.

Nearly 300 riders from across 31 states, one from Canada and another from Belgium will be biking in across Iowa with the Quad Cities Bicycle Club charter this year.

That club and many in the biking community lost a long-time fixture in RAGBRAI last year. Carter LeBeau had participated in every RAGBRAI since it began in 1973.

This year, RAGBRAI organizers dedicated a whole day of the route to memorialize him.

"He always wore those outstanding beautiful socks," said a friend of Carter, Tom Bolton. "He was an enjoyment to go out and bicycle with and he was never in a hurry. He was a smell the roses type of a guy."

Next Friday on the RAGBRAI route will be Carter LeBeau Day. Riders are encouraged to wear striped socks, in his honor.

Friends of the LeBeau family say eight of Carter's family members will continue his legacy by riding the route this year.

Riders start in Rock Valley, go through Mason City, Waverly, before ending up in Guttenburg.
